August, 1998 - July, 1999 The Petersen Law Firm, Costa Mesa, CA, Senior Associate Attorney. Public sector employment practice representing public employees, primarily police and firefighters. (On leave fo absence from UWLA, to which I returned in August, 1999.)
1990 - 1993 Western State University College of Law, Fullerton, CA, Assistant Professor of Law. Taught: Contracts, Legal Research and Writing, International Business Transactions.
1989 - 1990 International Catholic Migration Commission, Morong, Bataan, The Philippines. Instructional Supervisor of a 6-12 member team of Filipino teachers providing English language and American pre-employment training to Southeast Asian refugees destined for resettlement in the U.S. As the only U.S. attorney on staff, I also made presentations to refugee classroom translators on American government and the U.S. legal system. Left due to family obligations in the U.S., political unrest in the Philippines.
1987 - 1989 Contra Costa Legal Services Foundation, Richmond, CA, Executive Director, non-profit, public interest law firm providing free civil legal services to low-income residents of Contra Costa County (near San Francisco). Supervised approx. 10-attorney firm, in two offices: Richmond and Pittsburg. Generated funding from local municipalities, foundation grants and private donations. Resigned to take the ICMC position.
Spring- Summer,1987 Lewis, Damato, Brisbois & Bisgaard, Los Angeles, CA, Associate Attorney, commercial litigation. Resigned to take the CCLSF position.
1986 - 1987 Law Firm of Gregory G. Petersen, Santa Ana, CA, Associate Attorney, civil practice in public employment and civil rights representing public employees: police and firefighters. Resigned to take Lewis, Damato position.
Fall, 1985 Haissly et Vodoz, Geneva, Switzerland. Internship in international commercial practice as part of legal studies at Salzburg, Austria. Left early due to family illness.
1984 - 1985 Robert Ventre Associates, Inc., Newburyport, Mass. Taught English as a Foreign Language to Saudi Military Personnel in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Left after completing one-year contract.
1981 - 1983 U.S. Peace Corps, Costa Rica, The Dominican Republic, Morocco. Originally posted to The Dominican Republic as an agricultural extensionist, then transferred to Morocco where I taught English in a Moroccan high school.
1979 - 1981 Legal Services Program for Pasadena and San Gabriel-Pomona Valley. Directing Attorney, Pomona Office, a five-attorney operation. Consumer protection, housing, government benefits practice. Resigned to enter the Peace Corps.
1976 - 1978 San Francisco Neighborhood Legal Assistance Foundation, Staff Attorney. Caseload included housing, civil rights, consumer protection, family law, bankruptcy, etc. Scores of court appearances, several trials.
